The protection against viruses is necessary, that is why it is necessary to take 2 tools. One tent to discern viruses and other one acts as a shield between the computer and Internet to block intrusions.

An antivirus

The antivirus is the first defence of its computer. He allows to prove permanently that no virus tries to infect the computer. If he discerns an intruder, he puts him in quarantine to prevent him from acting. It is then possible to try to repair the contaminated file or to abolish him.

However, an antivirus which is not up to date is vulnerable. Many viruses appear, it is therefore necessary to download new updates regularly (definitions of virus) to allow the antivirus to discern new threats.

You can opt for a paid antivirus (Norton, MCCAFEE, Panda). Otherwise search a free antivirus on Internet as AVG or Avast: Antivirus

A firebreak

A firebreak is a software which controls the data which enter and go out of your computer when you are on a network (local, Internet). He allows so to prove that nobody tries to enter your computer. It makes you "invisible" for the hackers by concealing harbours used by the computer.

You can use paid firebreakss as Norton Security or download a free on Internet as Zone Alarm: Zone Alarm.

Windows have a firebreak but which is not also competitive as a paid or a free as Zone Alarm. Furthermore with Service Pack 2 (= updated) Windows include a centre of security regrouping options concerning antiviruses, firebreaks and updates.

Go to the Control panel (Start / Control panel) then double-click on 'Centre of Security'.


A window shows the present state of the computer from the point of view of its security.


By clicking down on 'Firebreak Windows', a new window allows to speed the firebreak up or not Windows. Principle is the same for the automatic updates of Windows.


If your antivirus is admitted well by the Centre of Security, protection is therefore 'Speeded up '. But some antiviruses or version are not discerned by the Centre of Security. Instead of having a warning 'Prove Status', click on the bar 'Protection Antivirus' then on ' Recommendations '. In the new window, check 'I have a programme antivirus which I manage myself'.
