The register is a database understanding information on the configuration of the computer (profile of the users, installed programmes, present equipment, parametres and properties). It is a fundamental element of the computer that it is sometimes useful to manipulate to resolve problems or to change parametres of Windows. |
To throw the register of Windows, go to Starting / to Carry out and types
regedit.
Before any manipulation of the register and by safety measure, it is necessary to make a copy of this one. For it, click on 'File / Export'. Give a name to this maintenance and choose 'Very ' down, in 'Expanse of selection'.
In case of problem, it will be enough to 'File / to Matter' then to choose the register (*.reg) before safeguarded to return to the previous state.
A little vocabulary... In example below:
- ' HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT ' is a key.
- '.323' a sub-key of ' HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT ' is.
- 'Happy Type' is a value.
- ' text / h323 ' is data.
The register is organised in a hierarchic way, in tree-like aspect with keys and sub-keys. 5 main keys are the following:
| HKEY_CURRENT_USER |
Corresponds to the root containing the information of configuration of the linked user. parametres user of files, screen colours and of the Control panel are stocked here. This information constitutes an user profile. |
| HKEY_USERS |
Corresponds to the root of all users' profiles of the computer. HKEY_CURRENT_USER is HKEY_USERS's sub-key. |
| HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE |
Contains the configuration information specific for the computer (for all users). |
| HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT |
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software's sub-key. Information stocked here guarantees the opening of the required programme when you open a file since the Explorer Windows. |

The local computer in starting contains information on the material profile used by. |
